Kinja'd!!!

I made the mistake of checking the news this morning. The world  has gone insane. More accurately, it has always been insane but we didn’t have 24/7 coverage of how bad it is. A friend/mentor of mine in a WhatsApp group basically told us all to chill out and passed on this article. It explains why we’re all wrong, and why screaming about it on cable news doesn’t help. Great read if you have some time today; because I’m wrong, you’re wrong, and that’s ok.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Maybe Ford and Chevy, import and domestic, black and white, jeepers and glampers, left and right... can all coexist. Except those bro-trucks with low profile tires and lift kits. They’ll always be wrong, and you can’t change my mind. Have some more “I’m more off-road than you will ever be” planes for your time:

Nothing wrong with those Cubbie pics though. And yes, we’re so screwed.

There are actually tons of psychological pitfalls to fall in. Our brains are wired to lie to us often, which is why cults are so easy to form. Someone says the right combination of words, plays on your fears and emotions, and they can sucker you into anything.

People ask my why I doubt myself so much. I always say it is what keeps me sane and rational. The minute when you are sure you have the answer is the minute you don't.

Yeah, it’s more fun to go someplace where almost everyone agrees with you and pounce  on the weirdo that disagrees... just look at the FP comment section

The worst surgeon I ever saw was also the most confident. Not a coincidence

The most fun are the people who are able to recognize they were wrong, but cling to their prior position anyway, because of how invested they are in it, and because they don’t want to appear to be defeated by or selling out to the opposition. Like 1902, when the socialist candidate for the Chamber of Deputies from Martinique admitted privately that they needed to evacuate due to the volcano, but continued to publicly criticize the governor ’s evacuation proposals as an attempt by the incumbents to steal the election.

Man those pics are my dream!

Also yes we all surround ourselves in bubbles that confirm ourselves and it’s hard to overcome.

But go to the weirdo with questions and never disclose your own opinions more than you have. Might learn something...

“ For all the large-scale political solutions which have been proposed to salve ethnic conflict, there are few more effective ways to promote tolerance between suspicious neighbors than to force them to eat supper together.”

Perhaps it is not difference , but distance that breeds tribalism and hostility. As proximity increases, so does understanding. I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.”

Facts don’t change our minds. Friendship does.”

This actually makes a lot of sense to me, and I think it explains why the internet is often such a volatile and hostile place. It’s really easy to form strong negative opinions about people when you’re not actually speaking with them face-to-face. I bet a lot of us wouldn’t be quite as critical or hateful towards people like Donald Trump if we got to actually meet him in person (this is coming from someone who has often disliked Trump in the past). This is why the world seems to have collectively gone insane... We as a species were never meant to interact solely through screens. Screens aren’t real enough.

Its good to be able to defeat your brain. I’ve had many political and social opinions overturned by my friends and especially by my wife . I owe them a lot!

Freakin bushplanes too, man. Rad as hell. Won't convince me otherwise.

1985 Trump might be palatable, in a flamboyant circus showman kind of way . 2020 Trump, I can’t see much of merit even not counting his politics.

Or more likely we call them “Il presidente” or “Prime Minister” or “Mr. President” or whatever title Putin uses these days (Emperor?)

All I’m saying is that if you sat down to eat a meal with him, you might feel differently. For me, I imagine he might still rub me the wrong way in the end, but I wouldn’t all-out hate him. Plus, I read the back cover of Mary Trump’s book, and it explains a lot about why Trump is the way he is. He’s still annoying, but I feel like I can show him a bit more sympathy now.

One of the first things i tell new employees that I manage - I’m frequently wrong; sometimes it’s because it’s the better way to do something, sometimes it’s because I’m a dumbass. Don’t be afraid to push back a little.

But I don’t like KFC or crispy steaks :)

Maybe if he didn’t speak (much) he could be bearable - how someone with a supposed Wharton degree (even if purchased) can release that prattle is astounding. It might not be him, but the mess he creates - more danger than irritation.  No doubt something was amiss in his upbringing, but sympathy is hard to find.

It’s a matter of people being too stubborn to change, and with that stubbornness comes the issue of other people flat out refusing to associate with anyone on the other side.

We’re all wrong, every single person, especially the people who think they’re not. I t’d be nice if everyone could see that.

Although I’m probably wrong.

There’s just some many factors at play these days. We live in a time of information overload. There’s so much media consumption and a huge percent of the population can now add their voice in the vast yonder.

I understand this whole push to make every aspect of online conversation political or societal and I simply don’t like it. There are places for it but not everywhere.

There’s a scene in Death Stranding where the main character wakes up hand cuffed to a bed and is then quickly shown that the handcuffs are actually like a smartphone. It’s actually a really striking revelation   to think of phones, computers and TVs like handcuffs.

I’ve really been debating a “No Screen Sunday” Diet where I turn everything off for 36h (like Sat night to Monday morning). Just relinquish and reflect without influence.

Based on what I know about his diet, I’d probably think even less of him if I had to witness him eat a meal in person.
